New York Road Runners, TEAM for Kids
Program Manager: Janell Bolen
1. Project Overview
The Mighty Miler/Young Runner program is a school based running program aimed at obesity prevention. Schools are selected through an application process. Participating programs must have student populations where at least 50% of the population qualifies for federal free and reduced lunch.
2. Program Objective
The objectives of the Mighty Milers and Young Runners programs are:
- Teach kids a mindset and methodology to get in shape now and remain in shape throughout their lives;
- Teach kids the link between goal-setting, effort, and achievement;
- Engage kids in a program structure that enhances their self-esteem, self-discipline, perseverance, focus and sportsmanship;
- Utilize program structure to increase kid's understanding of health, nutrition, and academics by incorporating program experiences as teaching opportunities.
Mighty Milers
Mighty Milers is a physical education program for schools and youth organizations that instills the daily habit of running and/or walking for health, longevity, and well-being. Mighty Milers stimulates elementary school children of all fitness levels to run and/or walk 26.2 104.8 miles (one to four marathons) during the school year by covering upwards of half a mile, three to five times a week. Students earn incentives every five miles including a medal for every marathon of miles they complete. Mighty Milers can supplement or become a school/organization's physical education program; make recess time productive and orderly; provide classes with a fun, focused, fitness break; or serve as the warm-up session for an athletic team.
Young Runners
Young Runners is an intensive program which motivates and trains elementary through high school students to run one mile to ten kilometers (6.2 miles) without stopping, through active participation on an after school (or before school) running team. Participants learn to set and achieve challenging personal goals and are awarded incentives for attendance and improvement. Young Runners, while intended to be physically challenging, is designed for children of all fitness and athletic levels. It uses the structure and popularity of the team to help kids reach their full human potential, not just their athletic potential.
3. Target Population
School age children in grade kindergarten through 8th grade that are registered in school in qualified Arizona school are eligible participants.
4. TEAM for Kids
The New York Road Runners Foundation Team for Kids is a national community of active adults of all abilities devoted to helping members achieve their personal goals while raising critical funds for the NYRR Foundation, the youth services arm of the Road Runner Foundation.
While enjoying the benefits of participating in one of the most supportive training programs available, TEAM for Kids members serve a pivotal role in reversing one of the most alarming health crises of our time: childhood obesity.
The NYRR Foundation provides fitness programs for 15,000 children who otherwise would have little or no access to physical education. Team for Kids members raised more than $1 million last year, enabling children to participate in running programs at more than 100 New York City schools and community centers, as well as new sites in San Francisco, Tampa Bay, and Phoenix.
Team for Kids members are required to raise a minimum of $2500.00 prior to running in the New York marathon. Starting in 2006, funds that are raised by team members from states other than New York will go back to the home state to provide running programs in eligible schools. Funding will be through in-kind donations of good and services from the New York Road Runners Foundation.
5. New York Road Runners Foundation and Chances for Children-Arizona Partnership
Chances for Children-Arizona has been selected as the official Arizona partner for the Mighty Milers and Young Runner program. Starting in January 2007, the New York Road Runners Foundation will be providing Chances for Children-Arizona all of the incentive materials, school mileage web site hosting, and program guidance.
