Chances for Children-Arizona is proud to partner with Girls on the Run
GOTR aims to educate & prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living

This year Chances for Children provided 15 girls the opportunity to participate in GOTR by providing them with Nike running shoes.  Our goal is to provide all children an opportunity for success.  This program is a stepping stone to a lifetime of future leaders.

Girls on the Run is an amazing, life-changing program.  The mission of GOTR is to educate & prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.  The 12 week curriculum is designed for girls in 3rd-5th grade to help them discover their "inner champion".  The girls conclude the 12 week program by finishing a 5K, and being recognized for this incredible achievement at a banquet held in their honor.

We use training for and participating in a 5K to teach girls various character-building lessons including such topics as:  The medias influence on body image, avoiding drugs & alcohol, the importance of personal values, healthy eating & lifestyle habits, sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity and much more.

The girls practice after school 2xs/week for 12 weeks.  At each practice interactive lessons are presented by volunteer coaches, then incorporated into running/training activities to prepare them for their 5K.  In addition to the character education & training, the girls learn that they can make a diffence in their community by conducting a community service project!

By the end of the 12 week season, each girls has developed an incredible sense of empowerment and self-confidence because she has accomplished something she didn't even know she could do when she started the program.  She learns that her worth is not determined solely by her outer appearance which is a timely lesson, because as girls enter adolescents many begin to feel increased pressure to look like models/pop stars in order to feel "valued" by society.  Finally, the girls have learned that running is just like life:  They will accomplish their goals if they just keep putting one foot in front of the other until they reach the finish line.
