Chances for Children-Arizona had a great 2007 and is having an amazing 2008!  We are making great strides in providing new recreational opportunities for children and families in our state.

We kicked off the 2007 school year with the first annual Chances for Children-AZ Sprint Triathlon in Tempe at Kiwanis Pool.  230 adults and 60 children beat the heat to bring awareness to childhood obesity prevention and family fitness.  The 2008 event is scheduled for Sunday July 27th.

In August, we moved indoors for the first annual Pedal for A Purpose, making a difference for children near and far.  The event was sponsored by Functional Performance Center in Tempe.  Funds raised through this 12-Hour spin class were used to purchase Nike Running shoes for children in our local running program and for children in a remote village in Africa.  It was an amazing experience for everyone involved.  Over 100 individuals participated in a relay format throughout the day, while 16 individuals made it solo remaining on their bikes for the entire 12 hours.  Look for this event again in August at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.

Our children’s running program started moving in September.  Chances for Children First Step Fit Kids is a school based running program designed to get kids and families moving.  Children are provided all of the necessary “materials” to get active including Nike running shoes, team shirts, mileage logs, nutrition clinics, running incentives, and race entries into the following races:

Nike Regional Cross Country Championships Kids 1 mile Fun Run Tempe, AZ
Phoenix Children’s Hospital Kids Rock Race/RNR Marathon
Tempe, AZ
Ford Arizona Ironman Kids 1 mile run Tempe, AZ

This year we had two different running programs in action.  The first program is designed to fully fund school programs that are in need of assistance.  These schools included:

Tempe Thomas J Pappas Elem.
50 Participants
Tempe, AZ
Frank Elementary School (TED)
200 Participants
Guadalupe, AZ
South Valley Academy
125 Participants Tempe/Phoenix

Our second program was created to provide new opportunities for children and families in our community.  These programs received incentives, team t-shirts, and discounted race entries.  Participating schools included:

Our Lady of Mt Carmel
65 Participants Tempe, AZ
Cerritos Elementary
150 Participants Phoenix, AZ

In January, the 2008 Rock and Roll Marathon brought new meaning to the word amazing.  We rocked in 2008 with the marathon, half marathon, and kid’s race.  It was a busy weekend with some great results.
  • On Saturday, we had just over 500 children run in the kid’s race as a part of Chances for Children Fit Kids.  It was so awesome to see so many smiling faces from both the kids and parents.
  • On marathon day, we jump started the morning with the Sole Sports Warm Zone benefiting Chances for Children-AZ.  350 marathoners and half-marathoners were treated to VIP amenities including private transportation, pre-race food and drink, music, and bag drop off.  Following the race, runners were welcomed to the Chances for Children tent with post race food and drink and race bag pick-up.
  • Our first year adult training team, TEAM Chances, also had a great race.  90 marathoners and half marathoners competed in the race on behalf of Chances for Children.  Our TEAM Coach, Susan Loken finished 7th female overall!!! Way to go!!
We didn’t stop moving after the Rock and Roll Marathon!  On January 23rd, we started our first high school running program at Pinnacle Charter High School in Tempe.  After a motivational presentation from Racing for Recovery, we had 20 kids sign up to get moving.  These teens are primarily “at-risk” teens that are facing or have faced huge life challenges.  Our program is designed to provide them with positive, healthy alternatives to keep them on the right track.  By the end of April, we had 17 students complete the program with 13 of them finishing it up at the Scottsdale Night Run for the Arts.

We weren’t done yet!!! MOMS Running for More is our spring training program.  The funds that these ladies (not just Moms) raised are used to ensure that the high school program continues to grow.  On April 2, 2008, 16 women traveled to New York City for the More Marathon and Half Marathon.  MOMS Running for More team member, Susie Meyers-Kennedy placed 2nd overall in the marathon.

Finally, as the school year is winding down and warm summer temperatures are approaching, we decided to make one last BIG SPLASH at Frank Elementary School.  As a community organization, Chances for Children has a responsibility to promote water safety for all children.  Swimming is an excellent recreation alternative for kids and it will provide some memories that can last a lifetime.

Chances for Children presented students in pre-school, kindergarten, grades 1-2, and the special education population will all receive a voucher for a FREE 2-week session of swimming lessons at Kiwanis Pool.  Children in grades 3-5 were all given a 31-day FREE pass to the wave pool that can be used at anytime up to December 31, 2008.

Team Chances is a vital part of Chances for Children’s mission of fighting childhood obesity by promoting running and fit lifestyles. Team Chances fundraising efforts make it possible for us to grow our children’s running programs with continued emphasis of family fitness.

It takes a Team to make a difference! Join Team Chances today and make a difference in the lives of our valley children while making a difference in your own life.
