PHAT Camp Pheats!
Arizona is facing an obesity epidemic, which affects not only the adult population, but also our children. Physical, Health, Activities, and Training (PHAT) Camp was created to provide all participants access to education in Exercise, Health, and Nutrition. Successful participants are then motivated to maintain healthy lifestyles with the support of their parents and program directors.
The primary objective of the Physical, Health, Activities, and Training (PHAT) Camp is to make a difference in the future of children in Arizona. This grass roots endeavor is designed to bring positive results for all participants with the goal of expansion to a larger population.
PHAT Camp participants include children ages 7-12 in the Metro-Phoenix area that are combating weight issues or are at risk of obesity. The goals and expected outcomes of each are:
- Body fat to decrease by at least 4% per participant.
- Weight will not be the focus; body fat percentage will be measured.
- Kids will receive training in at least 1 sport and up to 5 sports of their choice.
- Kids will experience improvements in self esteem as reported through tests and parent reports.
- Kids will gain an understanding or portion sizes. They will also be able to identify all major food groups.
- Kids will be proficient in counting calories.
- Kids will develop clearly defined personal fitness and nutrition goals.
- Kids will gain positive socialization skills.
- Kids will fill like they have succeeded in the program, and that they have the skills for continued success.
Upon registration, participants and their families all must agree to stringent attendance requirements for participation. These include:
- Participants must be in attendance 4 out of 5 days per week. Each session is 1-hour in length.
- Parents/Guardians must complete and sign all medical program waivers.
- Participants agree to participate in all body analysis and metabolic testing.
- Parent/Guardian agrees to provide/arrange transportation for all events.
High expectations and requirements are set in place to help PHAT Campers learn to live by accountability for themselves in a team atmosphere. “I firmly believe that we can teach children that they are responsible for all of their actions. I am committed to assisting families in changing their lives forever, by teaching children to accountable for their actions. In this case, their actions may be affecting their health”, reports Cindy Feltman, PHAT Program Director. The results speak for themselves. The TEAM 1 test group included 5 participants.
The fist session of PHAT Camp was held at the Village Racquet Club at DC Ranch. Participants were hand selected by the program director. After an eight week period, each participant lost between 5 % and 15% body fat. Participants were also instructed in soccer, baseball, football, and golf sports by local professional athletes.
