Kids Rock Stars - PF Chang’s Rock and Roll Marathon

1. Project Overview
The Kids Rock Stars program is a running/walking program designed to get children moving in the fight against childhood obesity. In the program children are challenged to run or walk 25 miles during the fall semester at school. Children are assisted through the program by tracking their completed miles on a chart. Additionally, they receive incentive awards for every five miles logged. The culminating activity is the PF Chang’s Rock and Roll Marathon Kids Race held in Tempe, Arizona on January 14, 2007.
2. Program Objective
The objectives of the Kids Rock Stars Program
- Teach kids a mindset and methodology to get in shape now and remain in shape throughout their lives;
- Teach kids the link between goal-setting, effort, and achievement;
- Engage kids in a program structure that enhances their self-esteem, self-discipline, perseverance, focus and sportsmanship;
- Utilize program structure to increase kid's understanding of health, nutrition, and academics by incorporating program experiences as teaching opportunities.
- Assist families in becoming healthier through educational seminars and training.
3. Participating Schools
During the 2006-2007 school year, 11 schools are participating in the program. The majority of the schools are located in the surrounding neighborhoods of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Participating schools include:

4. Program Components
- The Kids Rock Star program provides the following:
- Nike Running shoes to all participants
- Nutrition education for parents at 12 school based events.
- Motivational materials to students and parents designed to increase family participation.
- Banners for each school to hang in the office.
- Kids Rock Goody Bags and T-shirts to the schools,
- Entry into the PF Chang’s Kids Race.
- Translation services as necessary for bi-lingual populations.
- Supports exercise and nutritionist review of program activities.
